The blue blobby thing is the same kind of magic as the mist Nightmare Moon turns into, in case that wasn't clear. And apparently they make great shadow puppet puppets!

How did she end up in the moon though? She didn't turn to Nightmare Moon as a filly, so I think there's something else.
